Gas barriers are essential wherever there is a methane or radon gas risk. Radon is frequently discovered over granite formations, whereas carbon dioxide and methane are produced because of decomposing organic matter such as natural or ground-made deposits like silt, peat or coal. Developments on brownfield sites such as contaminated land or old industrial sites require efficient gas barriers to stop volatile organic compounds (VOCs), hydrocarbons and harmful gases from permeating into buildings.
Typically, an impermeable barrier is constructed in the foundations of the building over a highly permeable ventilation layer. VOCs and hazardous gases move up through the soil and collect under the membrane in a sump, where they are vented and safely diffused into the atmosphere. Predominantly used to prevent harmful gases from entering your building through service openings, construction joints and cracks in the floor slab, the gas barrier membrane should cover the entire plan area of your structure through to all the external faces so you can seal both the ground slab as well as any voids and cavity walls in hollow concrete block work.
