What is felt adhesive?
Roofing felt adhesive is a cold applied, black oxidised bitumen-based adhesive that has been manufactured to provide an alternative to roofing nails when fixing roof felt to a structure. It can be simply applied by brush or mop, and doesn’t require any specialist skills.
What are the benefits of using felt adhesive?
Using felt adhesive instead of roofing nails brings several benefits. Firstly, roofing nails will penetrate the felt, which creates opportunities for water ingress to occur. Felt adhesive does not require penetration of the felt layer, so there are no holes through which water can pass. Secondly, nails can become loose over time due to wind uplift and poor weather. Roofing adhesive, if applied correctly, will last the lifespan of the roofing felt. Felt adhesive can also be used to bond roofing felt to a wide range of surfaces, including concrete, asphalt, metal and wood – some of which roofing nails would not adhere to.
Felt adhesive as a cold gritting solution
Felt adhesive can also be used as a cold gritting solution – simply spread evenly across the roof and apply the chippings immediately, ensuring they are applied evenly and from end to end. Leave for 72 hours and then lightly brush off any excess chippings.
